At the turning of the World solo concert and touring program

“At the turning of the World”

Emily’s new performance & touring production

Combining classical with contemporary through utilising sampling and looping technology, Emily has developed exciting and innovative programs of new music for the cello.

She is a virtuoso cellist with renowned deft improvisational and composing skills and creates sublime music which fluidly crosses genres. Her music reflects her love of our natural environment and in the hands of Emily the cello becomes a voice for her personal experiences as she amalgamates melodies, rhythms and sounds from her field recordings within some of the compositions.

‘Emily Burridge lifts the subtle art of cello to new dimensions with her inspirational, moody, soulful and joyous musicianship. This is cello to lift the spirit, harmonise with the emotions and take you on a journey’.

Her programs typically appeal to a broad age range (from late teens to 60 +).

“At the turning of the World” New album release ’24 and performance program

Following on from the success of Emily’s earlier production for solo cello performance “Bach & music from Out of the Blue” she has now created a new program; “Bach & At the Turning of the World” alternatively  “At the turning of the World” .

“At the Turning of the World” features compositions produced since 2020 with a selection of compositions inspired by events in different parts of the world which have moved Emily to compose or arrange a piece for the cello. The sound cloud player below includes seven compositions recorded during a concert performance 2024.

In performance some compositions are accompanied by an orchestrated backing track, and others feature her dynamic and adventurous approach to composing and performing with the solo cello utilising looping pedals  operated with her feet, which enable her to record and multitrack the cello.

Brazil is a country close to Emily’s heart and in particular the indigenous people of the Amazon. In this production they are represented in the track “Sisters in the Forest” which was originally premiered at COP 26 in Glasgow and below is a video clip from this multi media solo presentation.

During her concerts Emily likes to communicate with the audience about what it is that inspired a piece of music and talks with wit and pathos. “At the turning of the World” performance production was conceived during the pandemic and developed between ’21 & ’24, with audience response and various events informing the way Emily has finalised it as a performance production.

Emily also specialises in performing “The Suites for unaccompanied cello” by JS Bach  and has previously found a Bach suite included complements the program. This depends on the environment and event in which she is playing and inclusion in the program is optional, however for concerts and festivals taking place in churches and cathedrals a suite by Bach integrated within the program works particularly well. For this concert program she currently favours the second suite in D minor.

Feedback from a concert promoter Spring concert ’24 (transcribed from a recorded response by a concert promoter at the end of the concert)

Emily, I don’t know how to say this, but you have captured something very special for us tonight.

You have captured in music an interpretation of real events and listening to the music is lovely but what you have done is bring it into our personal experience.

In response to “Nurses’s Song” (new composition created live with looping pedals I loved the way you interpreted the intention of the nurses between caring and rushing around and having to do a job.

“Pastoral Light” (accompanied by pre-recorded accompaniment) you then went on to capture that feeling of the first part of covid particularly the peace in the countryside during the first lock down as well as all the experiences we all had and mixture of emotions as we watched the catastrophe unfold through our TV’s and social media….and then when you went on and played your extraordinary solo cello composition “Fukushima” and conveyed through the music the power of a Tsunami – I was there in Tamil Nadu when the tsunami hit and your piece unlocked memories buried within me….

And then the last piece “Prayer for the Rivers”  in this building, a centre of worship for four hundred years – you brought Chartres to us  and you just brought alive that spiritual aspect of music that fits a building like this so well..(the current interpretation is transcribed from the original recording made in the Crypt of Chartres Cathedral and included on the album release “Compositions & Meditations”  live in Chartres cathedral.

Performance October 2024. Blandford Parish Church special event for the High Sheriff of Dorset and the Legal services music requested : “Bach & At the turning of the World” written response to the performance: “Thank you so much for your superb performance- everyone loved it”!
