"Time Amongst
The Xavante" is an exhibition of photos by Emily Burridge taken
whilst living and working with the Xavante tribal village in the Mato
Grosso, Brazil.
These images of the
Xavante provide us with a window into their world, and portray an extraordinary
trusting relationship that has developed between Emily and the Indian
community over the last four years.
Emily began working
together with these Xavante after a chance meeting with one of the Chiefs
of a village. She quickly came to appreciate the difficult circumstances
in which they were living and undertook to work together with the Chief
and members of the community. She coordinated a project, which in 1998
culminated in the successful implementation of a solar powered health
centre deep within the Xavante reservation. The story of how she became
involved with this tribe and the experiences which followed, is both
extraordinary and courageous.
As part of the exhibition
there is a display giving information on the Trust "Indigenous People's
Cultural Support Trust" (a registered charity since 1995), which Emily
set up with the objective to secure funding for projects which she developed
in consultation with this tribal community. It shows what has been achieved
so far, and will introduce the current projects and funding objectives.
Through the photos
you will be introduced to characters in the village:
The Chief...the Rain Man...the women and children...you will also see
the villagers as they go about daily activities.
Recordings of tribal singing and sounds of the forest accompany private
views.
