"Bach, Burridge and into the Amazon"
Solo Performance
In
the concert program “Bach, Burridge and into the Amazon”
Emily combines the early classical with the contemporary.
Selected movements from the Dance Suites for unaccompanied ’cello
by J.S. Bach are interwoven with Emily’s own compositions in which
she utilises modern sampling technology in an innovative way creating
exciting multi - layered pieces in a live setting.
Finally she invites the audience “into the Amazon“. In this
part of the performance Emily integrates recordings from the natural
environment of the forests in Brazil with recordings of Xavante Indian
traditional songs and creatively accompanies with the ‘cello extemporising
on the Indian chants.
Emily has developed her interpretation of the Bach suites over many
years. Her intrigue of them originally stimulated by the late Amaryllis
Flemming with whom Emily studied with scholarships both at Wells Cathedral
School and later at the Royal College of Music.
Through embracing the current sampling technology Emily has created
a contemporary dynamic within a classical setting and “Into the
Amazon” is Emily’s musical response to her personal experiences
of tribal cultures and the forest environment in Brazil.
The concept of the performance and the sonic journey that ensues is
a virtual audible biography.
Performance length 2 x 35 minutes with interval.

"Bach, Burridge..."
The
performance opens with the "Prelude" of the G major suite
by J.S.Bach. Then, utilising the looping technology to provide a "pedal"
note on G Emily continues with "Salutation", a way of greeting
the audience with her own composition. She then almost imperceptibly
returns to Bach performing the "Allemande" from the G major
suite.
"Reverie"
The
multi-layered backing was recorded in an inspired moment and saved using
the Boss 20xl looping machine. It now provides a background for the
solo theme. The title implies a dream and in the performance it precedes
a piece called "Globalisation". "Reverie" was originally
recorded in reaction to images of the Darfur refugee camps.
"Into the
Amazon"
In this production
Emily has created a magical tapestry of sound utilising recordings
which she made during her visits to a tribal community in Brazil.
With natural sounds from the forest and recordings of native people
going about their day she re-creates the ambience of the forest and
the people that dwell therein.
She has selected
various songs from a huge collection which she has made over the last
fourteen years and accompanies these with her 'cello sometimes as
a single accompaniment or she creates harmonies with multi-layered
samples which she makes live during the performance. This first video
clip is the opening "Dawn" followed by "Morning Song".

Emily
Burridge & BJ Cole
When
BJ Cole and Emily
Burridge perform together they produce a dynamic energy created
out of their complimentary musical perspectives.
Emily,
the classically trained virtuoso ‘cellist with a talent for improvisation
honed to spontaneous perfection by the demands of top flight session
work. ..and BJ, who’s 35 year long session CV adds weight to the
conviction that the Pedal Steel Guitar, his chosen means of expression,
is long overdue for a re-evaluation as an orchestral instrument that
demands a sophisticated repertoire.
The unique
combination of Emily’s ‘cello and BJ’s Pedal Steel
Guitar create orchestral sounds in a new and refreshing context; weaving
around one another in a sinuous dance of infectious sound and rhythm.
In their concerts they combine to perform their own Compositions alongside
works by Erik Satie, Debussy, Purcell and Copland amongst others. These
pieces then provide a window through which they enter a world of intuitive
improvisation and sonic adventure.
Over the few years, BJ Cole and Emily Burridge have established a strong
reputation with their unique musical interpretations.
The
duo have performed at a number of Guitar Festivals including The Wirral
International Guitar Festival, Birkenhead, The Lewes Guitar Festival,
East Sussex, as well as The Rochefort En Accordes Festival, France,
St Firmin’s Church, Lincs (as part of the ‘Music In Quiet
Places series), and regular appearances at the Royal Festival Hall Foyer
.
The
‘chamber music’ quality of Emily and BJ’s music is
especially suited to more intimate settings. The rise in the popularity
of ‘House Concerts’ has seen the duo become more active
in this area, with performances at such intimate venues as Otterton
Mill, Devon and several performances organized by Secret Concerts (www.secretconcert.co.uk).
